Uluru & Kata Tjuta: Photographs

Anish Kapoor first encountered the powerful religious significance of Uluru and Kata Tjuta in the 1980s. He saw Uluru as a landscape of monumental scale which had intimate and ritually resonant sites. He read its hollows and voids as resonating a primal structure and as an object with a perforated skin which lends itself to mythic meaning. On his visit in 1991 Kapoor sketched 'a white bump on a white wall' and made the sculpture When I am Pregnant (1992) describing it as an object in a state of becoming. The idea of the proto-object is central to Kapoor's work. Kapoor returned to Uluru and Kata Tjuta in 2012 and these two photographic volumes trace his journey revealing his pre-occupation with form and pre-form skin and surface in relation to deep interior. Steidl published these books without an essay or explanatory text. 2 Very Good + cloth covered hardbacks in cloth covered & decorated slipcase.
